David Mace, NZ Governance Fellow (Retired), ONZM , Doctor of Laws (LLD)

David Mace has a long and distinguished career. He studied accounting and commerce at the University of Auckland, is a chartered accountant and former senior partner with Ernst & Young in both New Zealand and Hong Kong/China, where he was responsible for major corporate restructures and liquidations. He served as a Commissioner of the United Nations Compensation Commission who were responsible for overseeing reparations for the 1991 Gulf War. The Commission, who reported directly to the UN Security Council in Geneva, dealt with $US330 billion worth of claims. As a leading representative of Freemasons New Zealand he has been deeply involved in the Freemasons support provided to the University for their research and education in gerontology, ophthalmology, and most especially neurology, over a long period. He is currently Deputy Chair of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Brain Research in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. David has been Chairman of Freemasons Foundation since 2006. He was a founding member of what is now Starship Children’s Hospital. He has been involved in many charitable organisations and activities, particularly in health and education, both here and in Asia for decades. David was awarded a New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the community in 2011.
